CAROL BRIGGS-SMALLEY SCHOLARSHIP

SCHOLARSHIP & APPLICATION FORM

The Carol Briggs-Smalley ICSH Scholarship was established in 2015 to honour the significant contributions Carol Briggs made to the discipline of laboratory haematology.

 

This Scholarship is for early career Medical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists (less than 10 years from primary qualification in medical science). Note applicants with a medical qualification or PhD are ineligible for this scholarship.

 

  • The ICSH will support a laboratory-based project that will lead to further standardisation of testing and analysis in haematology

  • Projects aimed at improving standardization in cellular analysis, haemostasis, flow cytometry, haemoglobinopathies or molecular haematology are all considered to be suitable for the scholarship, including automation and digital technologies.

  • The Scholarship can be used to support research leading to a higher degree

  • It is expected that project outcomes will be published in a suitable peer-reviewed laboratory haematology journal and presented at an international haematology congress

  • A presentation is required to be given to the ICSH General Assembly on completion of the project and within 2 years of the Scholarship being awarded.

  • The Scholarship is to support purchase of consumables and reagents, small pieces of essential equipment or contribute to staff costs to initiate or underpin a project.

  • An amount of up to GBP 10,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant for expenses required for the project.

  • Please note that computers, software, conference attendance costs, living allowances, travel, publication costs and institutional overheads will not be supported.

  • A 1-year progress report and final report will be required.

  • It is expected that the project results and findings to be published in a suitable peer reviewed laboratory haematology journal and are also presented at an appropriate international haematology meeting.

The ICSH Board will adjudicate on submissions and announce the winning applicants at the ICSH General Assembly which is usually held in early October each year.

We require 4 documents, combined into 1 x single PDF document:

1. ​A Project Summary in reasonable detail up to a maximum of 250 words.

 

2. A Proposed Activity document, a maximum of 3 pages, in Times New Roman 12 font to include:

​

  • Project Title

  • Project background

  • Hypothesis

  • Aims

  • Research Plan, including Samples, Methods and Data Analysis

  • Relevance to the ICSH

  • Budget

  • Budget Justification – detailing proposed expenditure

  • Cited references

  • Name/s of supervisor/s

 

3. A copy of your CV / Resume (2 page maximum)

 

4. A covering letter of support from one Supervisor.
